Alonzo Gee played a major role in the Alabama Crimson Tide 87-85 double overtime win against Mississippi State, snapping a four game losing streak and breaking a five game skid to MSU.

The two teams battled on February 21st at Coleman Coliseum. Most of the action happened during the second half of the game. At the end of the first half Brian Johnson scored, taking the lead at 30-29.

MSU held the lead for most of the second half until Anthony Brock tied it up at 52-52 with 8 minutes left in the game. JaMychael Green helped take back the lead until he fouled Dee Bost with 21 seconds left. Bost scored on the free throw tying the game 67-67.

Gee scored 11 points in overtime-10 of those during the second overtime. He scored two free throws moving Alabama into the lead. Demetrius Johnson and Justin Knox cemented the win with a total of three free throw points.

At, Gee said, “It felt good just to get hot. I felt my teammates got me the ball and I made some big shots. It felt good to win and hopefully we’ll get on a winning streak.”

Gee scored the first of 19 goals, and finished the game with a season high, recording a double double at 28 point and 10 rebounds in a game. With this win, Gee also passed the milestone of 1500 career points, gaining him his first Player of the Game honor.

“He was into me so I drove by him and pulled up and didn’t get the foul call. Just missed the shot. I was looking for a pull up because I knew going to the basket the refs weren’t going to call those calls at the end of the game. The refs aren’t going to determine the game.” MSU Barry Stewart said of his shooting at the end of overtimes.

Head Coach Phillip Pearson said of Gee, “I was so happy for him. He works so hard after practice. He’s usually the last guy to leave the gym. He’s got his degree. He’s up here working as hard as he can as a basketball player. I’m just so happy for him and proud of how he was able to step in there. He made a bunch of plays throughout the game but those couple of shots he made at the top of the key were huge for our team today.”

Along with Gee, Senario Hillman scored 21 points, and Demitrius Jemison scored 11 pointsts off the bench. JaMychael Green also scored a double double with 11points and 12 rebounds.

“It was obviously a heck of a game out there today. I’m just so happy for our team and proud of our guys, the way they hung in there and battled,” Pearson said. “We’ve talked a lot the past couple of weeks about trying to break through and fight through adversity and hopefully put ourselves in a position where we could come up with a win. It was a little bit of an ugly first half for both teams. We struggled and couldn’t seem to get it in the goal. We gave them some different looks, we played man which I thought helped us throughout the game. I thought Demetrius Jemison did a great job off the bench for us and Anthony Brock did some nice things for us. Andrew Steele came into the game and had that big defensive play, he did such a good job. It’s a great win for our basketball team and we have a bunch of happy guys in our locker room.”
