Some Activities to Do While Camping With Kids

Many times when people are new to camping they love the thoughts of being out in the great outdoors, they make a list of basic camping supplies to bring, then they get to the campsite and discover they’re not really sure what to do next. This is especially true when bringing kids along camping. Well, I’d like to help you out by giving you a few ideas to do next time you go camping.

Of course there are the obvious camping activities such as hiking, fishing, backpacking, and hunting.  To make hiking a really unique experience I love to play the alphabet nature hunt game. Challenge each player to find something that begins with each letter of the alphabet while out on a hike. Make sure the words are specific instead of general: “tree” is not an acceptable answer for the letter T. “Toad” would be a lot better. Some kids love to try and make a fire the really old fashioned way. Give them two sticks to rub together and see how long it takes them to get it started, or make a sundial out of sticks and rocks. Use cooled charcoal from last night’s fire to make some artwork. Try making a broom from a large stick and dried grasses tied with string. Can your child figure out a way to make a shelf or other furniture using sticks and twine? You’ll probably want to pack the scissors or a suitable knife for these activities. As you can see, there are many activities you can come up with, your imagination is your only limitation. Just have your supplies prepared before you go camping, have something you can pull out of the bag so the young campers don’t get bored and you’ll be the hero of the camping trip!
