Police restricting travel on US 90 (updated 6 pm)

Gulfport police barricaded DeBuys Road earlier this afternoon and prohibited northbound turns, to keep east-west travel moving.

“It’s about giving Biloxi a chance to breathe,” Gulfport Police Capt. Chris Loposser said.

Gulfport police will allow westbound travel to resume as soon as possible. Until then, motorists going west are being turned north onto Cowan.

“Once they cross the railroad tracks, they can go wherever they want to go,” Loposser said.

Biloxi police have blocked most side streets from the Coliseum east to Rodenberg Avenue. Northbound traffic is being allowed to use Beauvoir and Rodenberg at this time.

Loposser said anyone who doesn’t need to be on U.S. 90 should avoid it.

Harrison County Sheriff Melvin Brisolara had planned to send up a helicopter to monitor traffic, but said fog coming in off the Gulf is hindering visibility.

The Sun Herald will provide further updates as conditions change.
