In on the secret: Olivier Theyskens almost revealed the name of Kate Middleton's wedding dress designer

In on the secret: Olivier Theyskens almost revealed the name of Kate Middleton’s wedding dress designer

Given the secrecy surrounding it, one would imagine that those privy to the name of Kate Middleton’s wedding dress designer would be sworn to secrecy.

But not, it seems, Olivier Theyskens, the Belgian-born creative director of U.S. label Theory, who almost let slip the dressmaker’s name.

In an interview with online fashion site Stylelite at a Tribeca Film Festival party in New York, a reporter asked who he would like to see designing Kate’s dress.

He replied: ‘I — nobody knows?’

The reporter confirmed that this was, in fact, true, to which he revealed: ‘Oh my god, I know who does it.’

The 34-year-old then told exactly how close he had been to making the closely-guarded secret public.

‘I will never say!’ he exclaimed. ‘I was thinking everybody knew.

‘I was going
to say, like, “I can’t wait to see the dress _____ is making!”‘

The Styleite reporter then probed further asking if it was Libelula designer Sophie Cranston, to which he replied: ‘Who?’

‘Sophie Cranston,’ she repeated, prompting the frustrating response: ‘Who? I don’t know…’

The fact that Mr Theyskens is in on the secret delivers many clues about the designer Miss Middleton has chosen.

It is sure to be someone in his circle of friends (cue frantic research
into his past colleagues at Rochas and Nina Ricci, and fellow art
students at La Cambre, where he briefly studied) – and given the
occasion, someone British, or someone who works at a British fashion
house.

Prince William and Kate Middleton

Closely-guarded secret: Prince William and Kate Middleton will marry on Friday – but details of the bride-to-be’s dress are still under wraps

In addition to Ms Cranston, other names in the frame are Bruce Oldfield, Jasper Conran and Alexander McQueen designer Sarah Burton.

Issa designer Daniella Helayel, Alice Temperley and bridal designer Philipa Lepley are also among the rumoured names.

In any case, the chosen design will have to meet certain stipulations,
given the formality of the occasion, and a high neck and long sleeves
are almost certainties.

Designer Bruce Oldfield predicted last month: ‘I’m sure the dress is going to be modest in terms of coverage – it has to be.

‘It will have sleeves, it has to have sleeves. You can’t walk down Westminster Abbey in a strapless dress. It just wouldn’t happen. It has to suit the grandeur of that aisle, it’s enormous. I can predict she will wear a veil.

In any case, by Friday, the designer – famous or not – will be a household name. But for now, Mr Theyskens is keeping the secret to himself.
