Handpicked Family

I am very fortunate to have maintained long term close friendships across many miles, and many years.

Friendships that have withstood the test of time and distance. These are the friends that know me like no others do. From younger days, way back when. They remember events, places and fun times shared together, and all the crazy stuff we did that I don’t remember anymore, (and probably wanted to forget).

We have shared laughs and tears and frustrations. Letters, postcards and untold long distance calls that would likely add up to no small fortune in phone bills over the years.

No matter how much time passes in between it only takes a minute or two of conversation to connect again as true friends and to remember how wonderful it is to be able to share accomplishments, sorrows and dreams with someone that knows me so well, faults and all, yet loves and cares about me as only a true friend can.

What is a true friend?

These are the people you trust. You know they have your best interest at heart and they are going to tell you from time to time what you need to hear, not always what you want to hear. They are of the “handpicked family” as one of my fantastically wise friends calls these very special people, as she herself has been a true & trusted friend for over 26 years now and in all that time we only lived in the same city the first year we met when we became true friends all those years ago. We never lost sight of our deep respect and close bond of true friendship across many miles, years and provinces. We are each a part of the other’s “handpicked family”.

I think one thing true friends do best is bring you back to yourself. Reminding you of who you are and what you are capable of, even when you may have temporarily forgotten.

Life’s demands can stretch you thin and leave you wondering at times, where ‘you’ went.

If you find yourself in this situation it is time to call a true friend from your ‘handpicked family’ to set you back on the road home to yourself.

Oh and by the way, the best way to find a true friend is to BE a true friend.
