For The Best High Definition Experience Satellite or Cable

Ever since the development of the 3’ dish, from its 12‘ counterpart, satellite has made its way from rural areas into the urban lifestyles for many of us looking for an alternative to cable. At one time satellite offered more channels than cable, outstanding signal quality, at prices far lower than their competition, but today is satellite better than its cable counterpart and if so, why?

First of all, simply put, unlike NTSC or standard television which is  525 lines of resolution, high definition television is pixel based, like motion picture film. This replaces the 525 lines with pixels or dots, making video images powerful and better defined, while truer to the human eye because of the format displayed. This is why cinema was by far the more powerful medium before HD entered the scene.  The bigger the film stock, the higher the speed and frame rate of both with camera and projector, the better the image quality presented.

With High Definition television today the same representation is happening in terms of signal and quality of signal, because of the format information required to display HD correctly. This is why in the United States broadcast standards are changing signals from analog to digital next month (June 2009); to better provide for this information base. I’m sure you have all seen the advertising that you will need to get a digital box prior to the change taking place or else your television won’t work! So please take note and change accordingly to avoid any interruptions.

Satellite:

With high Def I can’t stress enough that the cleaner and purer the signal the better the image, it’s that simple! And what could be better than your own downlink which satellite provides? Absolutely nothing! This is the true consumer premier way to view HD free and clear of signal obstruction, and signal degradation. (As you will note in the following) Plus satellite offers more HD channels and is overall more user friendly in terms of service and accessibilities, then cable has ever been.

Cable:

With cable the only thing they can possibly offer, to combat Satellite, is it’s convenience.  The easy plug and play features, or ease of use, which is misleading, because unlike basic cable you require additional digital boxes if you want HD in more than one room of your home, which wasn’t the case with standard television. The signal cable television has to offer is nothing more than substandard as opposed to satellite, due to carrier, and sub carrier code information in the lines, internet, and signal degradation, being delivered to your neighbourhoods through the multitudes of cables, switches, and distribution amplifiers, from downlink locations miles away, simply makes satellite a far better choice in today’s market for true HD quality.

Working in the field on a professional level I can honestly tell you that some high end video projectors being 8K, 12K, and 18K N.C. lumens will not even except a fibre feed from a video processor with HD.  It has to be an optical DVI cable for the projector to accept and process the signals integrity.  That is how critical it is to insure true high def. On a consumer level, your option at this point are gold plated HDMI Cables.  My point here is that, if you spend $300.00 on a HDMI cable for true high def (as many retailers will try and sell you), and hook it up to cable television you have just wasted your money, because there is no signal integrity to justify the cost with this option.

 Internet TV:

For your future considerations, Internet TV is on the rise and I’m not surprised by this because it’s taking the same course as long distance and telephone service did a few years back. I could see cable companies being major ISP provider taking this if they are not already in it, and changing to Ethernet or Network cable, therefore isolating signals to better improve their service over eight wires as opposed to one wire and a ground that they have in existents now.

I can also see all electronic equipment in the future having an IP address, much the same as computers have now. I’m already seeing it with video switcher, screen switchers, projectors, and media servers, for communications and interlocking between the mentioned devices. But can IT technology give satellite a run for their money down the road? In my honest opinion, the answer is no.  Satellite still has the advantage of direct downlink. DSL (Direct Satellite link) for the internet, it still has signal degradation as it’s offered over telephone lines to the masses, and the same with cable internet. The only remedy to this, would be solid fibre optic lines delivered straight to your home or business.  This would be the only solution to come close to measuring up to satellite and the quality it offers.

In Conclusion:

Could you imagine having the only computer at the base of a downlink and think about how fast your computer would be when browsing with no lag time at all? That is the difference you need to consider. I know for a lot of people being in downtown areas may not have a clear view of the sky from the west to the south-west, but if you do I would consider satellite. Also, if you live in an apartment dwelling and want satellite they have now stands you can buy so you don’t need landlord or owner approval any more to affix to a roof or wall, you can simply set it on your balcony if you have one. Lastly on a personal note, in 1999 I was sold on satellite based on the fact as I have a cottage, and I could run the cottage for 2.00 per month as an additional room, and the same applies today, before that with cable every year I had to wait two weeks to get connected, which back then was the duration of my holidays then I got billed the same as in the city no acceptations.
