Fashion News: Hair industry legend Vidal Sassoon dies

Vidal Sassoon — who changed a generation’s approach to hairstyling (sculptural cuts, such as the one shown here, instead of pincurls; hand-held blow dryers instead of bonnets), coiffed a galaxy of stars (Mia Farrow, Ava Gardner, Nancy Kwan) and founded a global business empire — died Wednesday. Sassoon’s haircuts paired with Mary Quant’s clothes defined Carnaby Street style of the 1960s. [Los Angeles Times] [Photos]

Cameron Diaz
The rhinestone-studded Stella McCartney dress Cameron Diaz wore to the Met Gala on Monday night was almost too heavy to handle. It was 30 pounds when the actress tried it on Saturday, but they were able to cut eight pounds out of it before she walked the red carpet Monday. [The Cut]

The New York Post’s Page Six reports everyone was all ears at the Met Gala, wondering how conservative museum trustee David Koch (a billionaire and major supporter of the Tea Party) would react to designer Marc Jacobs’ getup of a transparent black lace dress over white boxers (which this column pictured Wednesday).  Koch took it in stride. His comment, according to Page Six spies: Jacobs “should’ve worn matching black boxers.” [Page Six]

Though Kim Kardashian never saw a red carpet she didn’t want to walk on, she didn’t attend the Met Ball. Beau Kanye West was there by himself. This is leading to speculation that reality star Kim isn’t welcome in fashion halls where Anna Wintour holds sway, and further speculation this could put a kibosh on the whole Kim/Kanye-I-wanna-be-a-designer relationship. [The Cut]

And in more news related to the Met Gala, Carey Mulligan is putting the knee-length gold and silver Prada dress she wore up for sale on E-bay, with proceeds promised to go to Oxfam America. Bidding is open now and closes May 19. [Racked]
