Design Competition To Air On NBC Next Season With Host Elle Macpherson

A competition series intended to find “the next big brand in fashion” to be hosted by model Elle Macpherson will air on NBC during the 2011-2013 season, the network announced today.

The tentatively titled Fashion Star will give 12 unknown designers the chance to win a multi-million dollar contract to have their entire fashion line on sale exclusively in one of the world’s largest retailers, according to NBC.

The series will span all categories of fashion from suits and dresses to lingerie, denim, bathing suits, shoes, accessories and more.

Viewers will be able to buy each week’s winning designs.

Famous designers and buyer’s from the nation’s largest retailers will serve as judges.

The show’s executive producers include Ben Silverman, a former NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios co-chairman, and Jane Lipstiz and Dan Cutforth, producers of Project Runway and Top Chef.

As head of Reveille, an independent production and distribution company, Silverman was responsible for helping to turn foreign series into American hits, such as Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, Ugly Betty, The Office and Big Brother.

“Brands have become expressions of communities and statements of identity,” said Paul Telegdy, executive vice president, alternative programming, NBC and Universal Media Studios.

“Polo, Kate Spade, Uggs, Ray Ban and Victoria’s Secret are all greatexamples of brands that have popped and reflect an entire lifestyle beyond just articles of clothing.

“This country is overflowing with incredibly talented designers from all walks of life who are waiting to be discovered.”
