Bingo was originally a European country fair game ? the booth owner would select numbered discs from a box and players would mark their cards with beans, hence the name Beano. The first player to cover a horizontal, vertical or diagonal line on their card with beans would shout ‘Beano!,’ and claim a prize.

In the 1930s Edwin S. Lowe, a travelling salesman came upon the game of Beano at a carnival in Germany, and decided, upon seeing the games popularity, to bring the idea back to America with him. Legend has it that when Lowe introduced the game to his friends, one of them got quite excited when she won and called out ‘Bingo!’ instead of ‘Beano!,’ and Bingo was born!

Lowe originally released a 12 and a 24 card set, costing $1 and $2 respectively. The popularity of the game was spreading and was being used to fund-raise by a priest in Pennsylvania, but there was a problem in that the cards were delivering too many winners rather than the desired one or two, as previously they hadn’t been played by groups of players. The priest employed the services of a university mathematician at Colombia University, Carl Leffler, who invented 6000 different bingo card numerical variations. Bearing in mind there were no computers to help complete this task, the poor mathematician was driven insane ? but the result was that there was now just one winner per bingo game.

Bingo didn’t become widely acknowledged until 1960, when the Gaming Act permitted such games to be played in members-only establishments. In 1968 a Gaming Board was set up to regulate Bingo clubs and another act was passed which allowed clubs to play bingo with cash prizes via tabletop coin slots. Bingo proved so popular that Bingo Halls were set up in all major towns in the UK, many of which still exist or have been revived in recent years.

Many people tried to imitate Lowe’s bingo game, but as he did not own the game, he asked that his competitors pay him $1 a year in return for using the name Bingo. This has resulted in Bingo being the generic name of all the variations of the game that exist today, including online bingo.

Online bingo has become extremely popular and figures released in 2007 by Global betting and Gaming Consultants, in a single year online Bingo generated wins of over £70 million, and it is predicted that the expected return on Bingo wins will reach £164 million by the year 2013! The best poker face tribute might have to go to Michael Mizrachi who is considered by many to be of the best poker players in the world, and he is pretty young to be able to have such things said about him ? he was born in Miami, Florida in 1981, and now splits his time between Florida and Las Vegas, with his wife Aidilay and their children.

Mizrachi’s started playing poker when he was just 15 years old, and quickly made a name for himself online and in live tournament games.

He decided to study medicine, but the lure of playing the game full-time took over and he dropped out of college. This was probably a wise move as he won the Five Diamond World Poker Classic II in Las Vegas in 2004, and secured himself a cool $274,000. In January 2005 he entered the World Poker Open, a World Poker Tour Event and made it to the final table. He went out in fifth place but proved that he had what it took to be a top-tier player. Not long after, he entered the L.A. Poker Classic and won it all. He has now won the World Poker Tournaments twice, and in 2006 CardPlayer Magazine named him Player of the Year.

Some say his nickname of the Grinder is due to his solid consistent style. However, when he first started being noticed on the tournament circuit, he would wear a baseball cap that said: ‘The Grinder ? I’m a machine’. So whether he intended for this to be his nickname hasn’t been confirmed! But he does state now that Grinder does signify his competiveness and determined spirit.

Mizrachi makes more money in a few wins than players ten years ago would have made in their whole poker playing career ? he is thought to have made $6.7million in tournament earnings. He is a dedicated family man, whose twin brother is also a professional poker player – their parents turned to games to keep the boys occupied and introduced poker to satisfy their need for competition. Mizrachi recently bought a tour bus so that his family could be with him when he is travelling between tournaments.

His favourite game is Texas Hold’em and he states that he has not learnt about poker through reading about it in a book. In fact Mizrachi credits playing online with some of his success in poker, as it gave him the opportunity to play against thousands of players thereby perfecting his technique, which he admits is aggressive, yet cautious and calculated.

Although Mizrachi might have a perfect Poker Face, don’t let the fact that you couldn’t lie to save yourself put you off!

One thing alot of people complain about with modern digital photography is that the camera seems to take the photo after the event that they were trying to photograph ? it’s like a delayed reaction, and it is said in photography circles ‘if you see the action then you missed it’.

The reason for digital delay is that the minute you take the picture the camera has to autofocus and take an exposure measurement at the same. If you push down the shutter release button down part way it will do that ahead of time and you can then take the picture exactly when you want to. This will all come with practice. Of course, you could just set your shutter mode to ‘continuous’ and squirt a long burst of shots, which is fine, but just not as precise!

Generally, for a 35mm camera, each 100mm in lens focal length gets you about 9 meters in coverage. This coverage means that on a vertical format photo, a normal human will fill the frame fairly well. However, as players get closer, your lens may be too long. Another important factor is lens speed, and the faster the lens, the faster the shutter speed you can use. By speeding up the shutter speed, you can almost freeze the action and eliminate blur. Shutter lag can also be reduced by turning off any unnecessary automatic features such as red-eye reduction.
