For example, the images you place on your walls should be positive and soothing, rather than depressing or agitating. And things like televisions, computers, or exercise equipment should be kept out of the bedroom, since they induce alertness and stimulation rather than relaxation and sleep.</p>
<p>Even if you are somewhat skeptical about these ideas, there is no question that much of the Feng Shui recommendations are in accordance with medical cautions regarding keeping distractions and stimulation to a minimum in the room where you sleep at night. Don&#8217;t get me wrong, as I know there are physical obstacles that can cause insomnia, like sleep apnea and obesity. But, those are really different problems, and insomnia is really just a symptom. With all the negative connotations around sleeping pills, it&#8217;s no surprise, that so many people seek out natural cures for insomnia.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve listed below that you should try out, if your having a hard time getting to sleep. Even if you don&#8217;t have chronic insomnia, many of these techniques are just good habits to get into for a sound sleep.</p>
<p>If you can&#8217;t sleep, try increasing your physical activity during the day. You don&#8217;t have to run a marathon, but just try to do something more than your doing now. Even something as simple as parking your car a few blocks further away from the office will get you doing more. It&#8217;ll probably be cheaper parking to. A 30 minute cardio workout every day would be ideal, but anything that exerts the body a bit more, will help you sleep better at night.</p>
<p>Be consistent in your bed time and your waking up times every day. If you can. Our bodies like to be in a rhythm, and if you go to bed at 10pm every night, then your body will learn to get sleepy at that time of day.</p>
<p>As I mentioned earlier, obesity can cause insomnia. And a whole whack of other problems. So, lose 10 pounds. Hell, while your at it lose 20. You&#8217;ll notice improvements in all aspects of your life, not just your sleeping.</p>
<p>Well, this may sound funny, but some people don&#8217;t sleep well when their feet are cold. If your one of those people that get cold feet easily, then maybe a pair of fuzzy and warm socks will help you sleep better. Who knows, it&#8217;s something easy to try.</p>
<p>Do you have lots of electronics in your bedroom? Given our gadget crazy society, chances are that you do. Clocks, LCD&#8217;s, cell phones, mp3 players, digital cameras, and all the recharges and docking stations that go with them. They all give off electrical fields that have been known to disrupt sleep patterns. Plus they all have those glowing LCD lights that stay on, even when the devices are turned off. Could make it feel like your sleeping on a airport runway, with all those blinking little lights.</p>

<p>If you meet these criteria, have your doctor prescribe a sleep study for you. Don&#8217;t wait! Your life could be shortened by sleep apnea, and it&#8217;s all unnecessary &#8212; there&#8217;s treatment. If you have sleep apnea, you hold your breath and then gasp for air many times a night. It results in increased risk of stroke, heart attack, and other cardiovascular disease including aneurysm.</p>
<p>Sleep apnea is caused by the collapse of the airway while breathing in. This condition happens when excess fatty tissue lining the airway causes the airway to lose elasticity. It is a condition generally caused by excess poundage. Snoring usually occurs also.</p>
<p>After the airway closes, the oxygen level in the blood drops. Blood pressure shoots up. The sleeper struggles to breathe and begins to wake up. Returning to consciousness, the sleeper opens the airway, and the breath is completed. The sleeper falls back to sleep. The cycle begins again, perhaps many times per minute. Breath cessation for 10 seconds will bring you a diagnosis of sleep apnea.</p>
